Default Timing Belt @ 98K

I just wanted to go on record that I just did the first timing belt change on my 2000 Audi A4 @ 98K + miles.

I bought the car used and was not sure if the belt had been changed. I was finally able to contact the owner and he never changed it.

A friend and I worked on it ALL DAY this Saturday. I have driven 200 miles since and so far no problems.

I am not sure how many have gone so many miles on the original belt and tensioner, but after seeing all the warnings I made it my first priority.

The old belt looked almost brand new. If the previous owner hadn't told me himself, I would have never been able to tell.

I used the write up on Audi World as a guide. I also replaced the tensioner, rollers, waterpump, etc..

With 98k miles, and for the cost, its worthwhile... I have a 2000 and replaced the timing belt/belts/roller/tensioner/Tstat and water pump with 72k miles... The gasket didnt look great, and besides, they have an updated oem pump design.

Now dont you feel like you can accomplish anything after that? Its very rewarding knowing all the money you saved isnt it?
Why did it take you a whole day?? I got it done in about 6.5 hours with my uncle. We didnt slack off at all though.

Even on these engines, the disassembly and reassembly for the timing belt and for the water pump overlap considerably. It is customary to change both together on almost any engine, although this is admittedly not as urgent as those in which the timing belt drives the water pump, as on the V6 and the AUG and AWM 1.8Ts.

For those of us who rack up fewer miles per year, 98k mi = 160k km is pushing our luck. For you, it was probably the right interval. You cannot completely judge the health of a timing belt through visual inspection.

I sure do. I feel extremely happy that I saved all that money. I also feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders now that this has been completed.

Regarding the change of the waterpump. It made perfect sense todo while down there. It was not leaking, but I was trying to be pro active.

It took all day because it was my first time doing the job and we took our time.... breakfast, beer, lunch, beer, dinner, beer.

On the cars, it wasn't the belt that went. Rather it was failure of the tensoiner that caused the belt to loosen and skip teeth.
