Thanks everyone.

ORIGINAL: jja2.8

i just had my timing belt replaced and paid only $296.23. i just got the car a few months ago, because i didn't know the full history of the car i thought i'd get the belt replaced, along with water pump and pulley, etc. once my mechanic took everything apart they said it all looked pretty new, and thought all i should do is change the belt and a gasket. it's a 99 2.8 with 90k miles.
Wow!! That was a deal. Just for the belt and labor they are talking about 900.00. Then add the water pump. I don't want to think about it.

I guess I will concentrate on the other problems for now. The bottle that holds the anti-freeze has a leak so I have to replace it at around $150.00. Also have to replace the fan on the passenger side. Don't know what it's these parts are called. The quote for it was about $400.00 for the part. I thank you in advance for any ideas about these quotes. I do like this car but I don't believe I can afford it. (no choice now). I guess you can tell that I am not anywhere near your experience. Sorry if I sound like a dummy, but thanks again. BTW I'm a girl.(lol)

If you mean the auxillary cooling fan (electric), it costs about 150 dollars. Have you checked the fuse?

Sorry... Think I called you dude about 3 times LOL. Anyway, 900 to do belt and pump is a little excessive. No offence but nearly every mechanic tries to take advantage of females & guys who nothing about cars. I'd call them back and say you got a quote for $650 including parts and ask why there is such a price variance. Also you should be able to pick up second hand parts a fair bit cheaper than that. To make things easier. Every Audi part has a number on it, it is 9 digits long. If you post it we can tell you the name of it & tell you were to price it & if it's wise to use second hand parts for it or not.

WOW I was given a quote of over $300.00.[sm=shootshoot.gif][sm=icon_flaming.gif]

I don't think it the fuse because it will start up when the car has been running for a while. It just makes a very loud noise.
