When you turn the engine over by hand, you make
sure there is clearance between the valves and pistons.
If they hit, you won't bend the valves.

How many miles on your car when it gave out? You may want to talk to Audi of America. They MAY reimburse you if it snapped at less than the recommended replacement interval.

118,000 plus some change when tensioner broke. I believe 105k is the interval. The thing that irks me about this is that I didn't know that there was a tensioner problem. I purchased the car with 94k on it. The dealer and his mechanic I bought it from showed me that they changed the belt (but obviously not the tensioner). So I thought all along that I was fine. Furthermore, I took the car to the stealer for a tie rod recall and they put on the computer receipt that the timing belt needs replacing. When I saw that I askedthem what they are talking about. It had just been replaced about 4k ago. They mentioned nothing about the tensioner issue...... said that the recommended interval was approaching and that is why they put it on the receipt. Go figure-total miscommunication on their part. I've been in the front end of this car numerous times, I could have done the work if I knew.

I believe that AUDI knew not to put "tensioner" on the receipt because that is not a normal maintenance item and could pose a liability for them. That's what it all boils down to.

I might give Audi NA a call. Might give NTSB? a call or letter because I don't care what anyone says it is a safety hazard when you lose power steering and power braking suddenly.

OK you got me going now.

How difficult was it to take off and then re-install the head?

Here is a little trick Id like to teach you (and everyone else)for when you reply to OLD threads. Check out the person you are asking the question to ( https://www.audiforums.com/showProfile.asp?memid=10246) and look at their "Last Post" date. If their last post date has been more than a couple months ago, dont expect a speedy reply. Try PMing that person in hopes of a reply instead of resurecting an old thread that clogs up the forums and pushes the newer more important threads out of the way. Know what I mean?
Since he has logged in very recently, a PM is the way to go... He obviously isnt logging in to check/create new threads.
