Timing belt tensioners one time use?
So I have to take the timing belt off to put on the new gasket for the water pump. But I have a new tensioner, all new belts, ect...I just overtightened the water pump gasket and it leaked. Now I have a new (much better) gasket to install.. and I didnt purchase a new tensioner because I assumed I didnt need to.. Now I would like to know if the timing belt tensioners are one time use items.. IE pull the pin, and your done with that one.
I had to use alot of pressure to push the rod back in enough to put the pin in.. But now the tensioner pin can slide in and out without work.
Anyone know?
Thanks
Andrew

I would think that It would be damn near impossible to re-install the tensioner. it might be possible but since it sounds like you broke the tensioner I would replace it. Since you just did the TB job I would just pick up a new tensioner from ecs or where ever.
It takes a week for anything to get here from ECS...
Also the audi is my driver...
The tensioner had tension on the pin after it sat for a couple of minutes so I reinstalled it and everything seems to be fine... We'll see.

ooooooooooo - RISKY - good luck - if the belt does skip it will cost you $3k so gooooood luck. where are you at - would Purems.com be closer - can you call ecs and get it overnighted. don't risk it
i dont know if they are so much one time use...but i was reading up on how to change the timing belt and i read that when the timing belt is changed it is recommended that the tensioner be changed as well. so it might be a good idea.
willard - we don't do the timing belt job to change the timing belt - we do it to change the tensioner because it has a tendencey to fail and allows the belt to jump teeth.
