How hard is it to replace/ check the timinr belt? I just bought an 01 A4 with 85,000 mi on it. Wondering if it would have been replaced already ? The car was well taken care of it has the orignal window sticker and everything. How much should I expect to pay for a timing belt change should I have someone else do it? What parts would I need to do it my self?
here is a picture of my belt. still has a lot of blue and you can see all of the writing. was done a short time ago or is what they look like when you guys get around to replacing them?

 

If you have a 1.8t, this should be a good reference in what is needed (its on a gti so the steps are not 100% the same)

I would check the service records first to make sure it hasn't already been done.

 

It is time. The parts run 275 over the net for belt and related hardware. Depending on the shop, labor runs 400-600 dollars.

If it hasn't been done already (which I doubt), it is time. Audi engines are interference engines which means that if the timing belt slips, the pistons hit the valves and you are looking at a 2500 dollar job for new valves.

 

How would I go about checking the service records to see if it has been done?

 

Just wondering,How do you know it may need a new timing belt? Is something wrong with the car now?
I have a 2001 A4 1.8T with 56K miles and I think I may need a timing belt as well.

 

The factory recomends for it to be changed at 100,000 miles, so its not a bad idea to do it early just to be safe. Why would you think you need a T-belt?
