Default Tiptronic or Manual??

I'm seriously looking at buying either a B5 1.8T A4 or a B5 S4 in the near future - (hopefully the S4).

I've been looking at mods for it, but I'm still debating the most important thing - transmission.

Do I want to go manual or automatic? This car will be my only car - daily driver. I live in the suburbs north of Indianapolis - some city, some country roads. I've driven manual before, on my Dad's old VW, but for city driving, it kinda sucked. Especially when it wasn't a fast car. When I was out and just driving, not multi-tasking, it was great. But trying to talk on the phone, and all the other crap just gets in the way with a manual.

So what do I do? Get better at driving a manual or stick with the Tiptronic?

Also, I'm wondering if mod'ing the hell outta a tip. car won't hurt the trans. AND, if the manual trans will take more aggressive driving better than the auto.

Thanks!

You will regret it if you get an automatic. Manual is more fun, especially if you're going to tune your car.

Put the phone back in your purse, gulp down your Latte, and concentrate on driving.

Get a manual.

Yea, I've been thinking more about it and I'm leaning more towards manual.

My only concern is if I'm driving it "right." Changing gears, downshifting, etc. One big one is if I'm backing up and still rolling, to switch it into 1st? Or do I have to be completely stopped first?

Another big one is downshifiting? Do all of you heel-toe or what?

THanks again for the input!

dont worry about all the fancy stuff - like heel toe etc.
just get your basic fundementals down... wht car are u learning / practicing on?
your dads VW? keep at it then.
I suggest getting more confident w/ driving standard (stick, manual, whatevers )
then getting the audi.. no sense burning up your clutch / tranny etc. on the audi

Also - when driving, u prolly should concentrate on the joy & experience of driving... n not multitasking...
