Default Tire shredding issue...

Thanks for providing a host of great knowledge folks, I've been enjoying reading through many of your posts.
Pleasantries out of the way-I have a small problem.
I drive pretty hard and I take care of my car with regular maintenance--why are the edges of my sidewalls shredding?
I'm on a set of 17" contipro contact continentals.
Is this just a Quattro thing? A driver error/style issue? Or just time for a new pair of tires...
Thanks for any help you can throw my way.

Are you sure they are inflated properly? What psi do you run?

I have conti xtreme contact 17's I have not had a problem, I drive pretty hard as well. I usually run them right around 40psi.

Deff check the tire pressure, thats a big cause of screwing up tires, they may look fine but put or psi gauge on it and see 18lbs yur in trouble, i run 40 psi as well and i check it every few weeks.

Thanks for the info guys. My tires are all at 30psi after just coming back from a check up. I gather they don't drive much at the dealership? Do you recommend all four at 40psi?
As for understeer--yes there is plenty of that.
I like to take my turns hard and when there is just enough of a drizzle-I enjoy a drift or 2 on my late night cruise back to my house.
As a second possible topic--anyone like Avon Techs over the Falkens?
Thanks again guys.

you could have a bent tie rod or control arm, that makes tires get eaten like no tomorrow.

Hey, ateurv8, would that happen under normal driving conditions?
I haven't hit anything with my car--not even a curb.
The last 2 days at 40psi seems to have done the job.
For my sake I hope you're wrong v8...

you need to watch your tires now, if they got chewed up pretty well and you are driving it the same way, you may blow a tire deff invest in some nice new tires, if you have a 2nd set up wheels go summer and winter tires best of both worlds, if not spend the money on all seasons
