Default Torn CV boot, replace both?

So got under the car last night to check on a tiny oil leak from my oil pan screw. It was fine, just a drop. Looked to the right and o geez...looks like someone took a knife to my passenger cv boot. Grease(or oil? its black.) all over my back wheel area.

So first, this is gonna sound so stupid but I just wanna check, the "outter cv boot kit" (from ecs) is for like outter towards the wheels ...right? obviously? And I can just get this at the stealership right?

And should I change all 4 boots at the same time (2 per side)? Or maybe just the outter two?

As much as this car gives me problems, i actually enjoy it...gives me something to do i guess...

PS, car makes a KNOCK KNOCK sound when hitting full torque (3200 rpm ish) in 2nd gear, not sure if its related. I've done tons of reading on motor mounts, anyone got a diagram as to where they are so I can check em out?

The outers are the ones towards the wheels. Just do the outer that is bad. The inners rarely fail. The knocking noise could be a bad cv joint due to the bad boot. Usually they are most noticable during low speed tight turns. You may want to do some tight circles in a lot to check out if the noise is still there. Also look closer at the joint. If its really dirty the joint may be bad. When the grease first starts leaking it is a grayish color.

They go bad, but ussually due to not fixing a torn cv boot. The odds of a joint going bad with a good cv boot is near nil.

might wanna add a new axle bolt, have fun pulling the cv joint over the one time c-clip. Your gonna need the one time clamp crimpers, they are only like $10 at autozone.

definitely time to check the cv boots before the snow hits and they sand and saltthe roads. sand on the roads in the winter will eat up a cv joint in no time. the boys in the south don't have to worry as much about that though unless they are near the beach.

Good boot kits will come with a new bolt. Then you can use the old bolt to hammer on the joint without damaging the end of the shaft. Pulling the joint over the c-clip is easy if you have a vice. Just pull the whole shaft out pound it off with a hammer. Much easier if u remove the old boot first. In a pinch a pair of sidecutters will crimp those clamps. I wouldnt worry too much about cutting it as youll find out when you get the old one off. Its a pretty tough clamp.

The kit comes with a new axle bolt, and the one time C-clip.............I have NEVER replaced in my life, nor have any other of the 30 mechanics at my dealer. Just get the cv boot repair kit and your all set.
Even if it were torn in the winter and road salt and grime were to get in there it would NOT damage the cv joint, our cv joints are "bulletproof" and don't need to be changed un-less someone with 600+ horse power fu**ed it up. Trust me.
