Default towing with a 2003 a4 3litre quattro

ok i posted this before - but it was nestled in with some other questions and as this is my main question so i'm reposting due to some not so technical sounding answers...

has anybody done any towing ? we are thinking with quattro it'll be powerful and stable enough to tow a horse float. there must be some weight limit to this - does anybody know what this top limit is ? has anybody towed a horse float / or boat with theirs ?

cheers

sus

I don't have any hard figures, but I wouldn't tow anything more than a basic Uhaul trailer. I believe the owner's manual addresses this. I did a quick search on AW b/c I'm curious too but couldn't find too much solid information. Maybe THIS might help?

Okay where to begin.

Towing a boat?? Horse float?

what is it's weight? tounge and axle.

I will tell you this, I have done a fair bit of boat towing and a 3,600 lb car is not what you want to be towing with.

First of all the brakes and suspension are not up to the riggors of towing anything more than 200lbs of luggage.

Second you'd have to have a hitch, For a large boat you'd need atleast a class 3 or 4 hitch...

Have you looked at the underside of our cars? Where do you propose to attach the hitch. Eek...

Lets assume you find a hitch, a place to attach it, upgrade the suspenstion to handle the added weight, and slap on some good pads and excelent brake fluid.

Lets simply talk now about the damage done to the Frame and under carrige body.

We don't have the basic Boxed in frame on these cars that a truck does, or even a sport ute. Those frames can easily handle the constant jerking and pulling and twisting of even the best installed let alone worst installed hitches.

Buy a truck to augment the boat, or moor the boat on a lake at a mooring dock. An audi is not what you want to be towing with.

I haven't towed anything with my A4, but I used to tow my bike with my RSX. The bike & trailer together probably weigh around 600 pounds. The owners manual said it was safe to tow up to 1,000 pounds. I only did it a few times and the car did just fine. I took it easy and had to downshift on hills, etc. Gas mileage sucked but I didn't feel like I was straining the car too bad though. On the other hand, it sounds like you're talking about something much heavier than 600 pounds.

i called the audi showroom and they reckon its safe to tow up to 1800kg with it... they have a special audi hitch they install... but yeah - it doesn't *sadly* sound like this is the car for us...

thanks all for their replys...
