which tranny code? help! newb here!

what code (2.8L) 5 speed trannys are interchangeable?
say you have a '96 that needs a tranny and it's got a CXW, can you use a 2000 code DWM?

please help!!!

i have a '96 A4 2.8L Q 5-speed that is toast.
