Default Tranny Fluid and Oil

I'm new to Audi's and my GF just bought a used '99 1.8 Turbo Quattro so I'm responsible for the maintenance. I changed the oil the other day and I was surprised out bad it looked after 3K miles. Would it be a good idea to switch to synthetic, and if so what brand is working well (I know oil can be a contentious issue so if you could just tell me what works for you) ? Also what brand of filters do you use?

After the oil change, I went to check the ATF level and I couldn't find a dipstick anywhere. How do you check the ATF level? I was searching around here and I thought I read something about it requiring a code reader. Is this true?

The car is great and it drives like nothing I've ever driven. Any help with the maintenance would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Default RE: Tranny Fluid and Oil

Hi twblanset, welcome to the forum. I have had good luck wit Mobile 1, 0W-40. It's the only Audi approved M1 oil wieght. As for the tranny fluid, it is a sealed unit. There is no dipstick. Audi considers it a "life time fluid". There is only a fill hole and drain.
