Tranny Problems
My 2001 Audi A4 1.8T, Automatic, seems to be stuck is 1st or 2nd gear, I really cant tell. My local tranny place checked out the pan and they said the oil was a little burnt, but no metal, they also said that two clutches may have been engaging at the same time. They seem to think the whole tranny isn’t broke. The check engine light came on and code was the gear ratios. They wont work on the car at ALL because they said the quattro auto is extremely hard to work on. I think the dealer will charge 3g’s to change the whole thing. If anyone has had a similar problem or had to change their tranny please give me some advice. The car only has 38k, that extended warranty I didn’t buy looks real good right now.
That sucks.. Especially with such low mileage! I dont know what to tell you, but if no one can help you here, you might want to try Audiworld.com or audizine.com.. People there seem to have more tech knowledge.. But Im sure liquid will be along shortly with a smart theory for you.

Gear ratio faults usually indicate some sort of slippage in the trans or torque converter. Both of which can cause the trans fluid to apear burnt. Most places wont take the tranny apart as parts and tools for repair are hard to come by.
Most VW or Audi dealerships won't touch a ZF automatic, beyond simple fluid and filter changes. How often, if ever, have you been changing the fluid? Many of us dispute ZF's "lifetime" fluid claim; one of my coworkers had the transmission in his Mercedes E-320 serviced at 60k miles / 100k km, after his mechanic reported that he had 3 E320s on his lot with blown transmissios and less than 100k miles / 160k km on the odometer.
