Default transmission?

im a newbee on here.... i was having a problem with my trasmission today(or so i think) ive got a 2001 1.8t 2wd. When i tried to shift to 2nd gear it stayed in first. so i tried putting it back to 1st then switching to 2nd gear agian but it stayed in first. i tried numerous other things but it wouldnt get out of first gear. my rmps ended up shooting to about 6k and i had a awfull smell coming from the end of the engine(where the engine meets the transmision). i turned my car off and back on and it started smoking from where the smell was coming from. i let it sit for a minute and tried agian and it ran perfect. Does anybody have any ideas? transmission fluid? clutch???

The first problem with your transmission is your spelling.

My next question is whether your car is a tiptronic or a manual transmission.

Either way smoke isn't good.

Sounds like a clutch problem or hydraulic problem with the clutch/master/slave. That said, I have a tiptronic so my experience on the Audi manual is limited
Any grinding perviously? Any problems shifting in other gears? When you said you were stuck in first gear, I assume that the car was moving. When you tired to go into second, would it shift into neutral and then grind when you tired to go into second, or was it stuck in first wieht you unable to even pull it out of gear. If you pushied in the clutch pedal would the clutch engage and the engine could rev without accelerating the car, or did pushing the clutch pedal do nothing?
How does your clutch pedal feel? Have you checked the clutch hydraulics? Have you checked the transmission gear oil level? Have you checked your brake fluid level?

there was no grinding of the gears. it would move to 2nd fine but it wouldnt actually change the gear in the transmition. all the fluids seem to be fine. thanks for your help.
