Default transmission A4 quattro 1997

My 1997 A4 quattro, auto, with 112,000 miles is vibrating in higher gears when the car is warmed up. When you take the power off and coast the vibration goes away. Seems the transmission is on the way out? Do you know if it is better to replace with a rebuilt trans or repair this one? LP

replace it if it's going bad, don't try to repair it...

Are the rebuilts any good, better to go new, or one from a wreck yard? How long can I drive the car like it is. LP

i don't know how serious your damage is, so i don't know how long it'll last....do you have the 1.8t or the 2.8? if you have the 1.8t, you can get the 2.8 tranny, which is stronger...a rebuilt is probably your best bet.

I have the 2.8. The vibration isn't too bad. A mechanic dropped the pan and said there were no metal shavings, but the oil is burnt (sigh of heat?). Do you know of any tranny shops in So Cal for rebuilts or is it best to go through a dealer?

if you've got the money you can take it to a dealer, but expect to pay about twice as much...i'm in norcal, so i can't help you with shops...

Burnt oil? Maybe it should have been changed more regularly?

A new transmission is about 5,000

A rebuilt one is about 2,500 rebuilt trany

a used one is about 1,000 used

cost about 600 or so to install at a non-dealership

would recommend getting a new clutch at the same time, cause it would be free to install

damn didn't read too good you have an auto....i think the prices will be about the same but just skip getting the clutch
