Default Transmission Dead ?

Yesterday, as I went out for lunch, I began to notice a slight 'shudder' as I let out the clutch to drive off.
The problem became progressively worse until I was driving along at about 80km/h (I think that's about 50mph) in 5th gear.
I put my foot down to accelerate slightly, then BANG! The engine starts revving freely like i'm in neutral, followed by some nice metallic rattling sounds.
My car had to be towed to my mates workshop... (Almost 3 hours for a tow truck!) i'm expecting a call today, yay!
This should be nice & expensive.

I'm not expecting anyone to diagnose this problem based on the sounds I just poorly described, but,
Would anyone know wtf just happened? Clutch? Transmission? Something else? What else could go wrong?

I really can't afford this **** [:@]

Almost forgot to add;
My car is a '97 1.8T quattro, manual
