Default transmission problem

I bought my nephew a 98' A4 quattro. It's been running lick a champ. He went out to leave to school and it started fine but when he'd let the clutch out it would not move.
No grinding, no burning clutch smell just won't move. It will shift and fills like the gears are engaging. What is your thoughts? Is there any thing I can check out with out pulling the trans?

Sounds like either the release bearing has failed or the output shaft in the trans has gone.. Either way I believe its trans out, but my experience isnt as good on the pre 2002 A4's

Sounds like the clutch plate is gone.. With the engine off and the car in gear and the e-break off, can you push the car back and forth? If so its simply the clutch plate.. Fairly easy/inexpensive fix.

^idk what the above poster is talking about..
