I bought a used A4 about 6 months ago. All has been well until the other day. Had drove car about 250 miles that daywith no problems. Got home and car set about 30 minutes and was on the go again. Coming back home, it was likeI had put the transmission in N. The gear dislay began blinking. Got off road and cut car off. Was only about .10 miles from home, so I thought I would try to get it home. Started back up and eased home. Gear display stopped blinking but the transmission smelled really hot. Next afternoon, started it up and cycled through Drive and Reverse in drive way - no problems. I got up nerve to drive it about 10 miles from home and back, again no problems. No jerking, no slipping, no smell, no blinking gear indicator on the dash board. Car is out of warranty by about 5500 miles. Anyone had similar issues?

 

My transmission wasnt smelling but it did have the other symptoms..turned out to be just the transmission control module.
