Default transmission shot?

I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 auto with 148,000 mile, the other day may car would go in drive but would just rev. i was able to drive it home in second gear.So later that nighti unhooked the battery maybe thinking that would reset the tcu, and still it would just rev in drive and only work in second gear. Then this moring on the way to a transmission shop i was able to shift into thrid gear with no promblem. Right its sitting in a shop if anyone can give me some idea that would be awsome!
~ thanks

Default RE: transmission shot?

this guy is a good friend of mine unfortunately i dont have an auto or tranny experience. he also told me that all the lights PRND32 were lit up at one time. I thought TCU fault code.

I told him the tranny fluid is good for life. he's going to total the car if it needs to be rebuilt. but if its an easier fix like his TCU has moisture or whatever we can take care of that. anyone know how we can get to the TCU I heard its under thepass side seat or floor or something. any help is appreciated.

If anyone knows please help before he totals his ride.

THANKS!
