Default Trip Computer

Hi All im new to the forum and have just got my first A4, its a 1998 1.8 SE in stunning silver.
I am very happy alround with the car but have one problem i hope someone can divulge some information into.
ok. I have a problem with my trip computer in the centre of the instrument cluster, when i go out in the morning and start the car all is well i can read all the digits great but as the day goes on all of the digits from centre to the right hand side slowly dim and disapear. What i want to know is, is this a comon problem and how can i resolve this without having to fork out and purchase a new one. i asume this problem ocures when it warms up, so would a verry small 12V fan stuck to the back solve the problem. I know this is not a major problem but verry anoying.
Any help apreciated

This is a very common problem. Do a search on it and you will see lot of people complaining about it.

This was a defective part. There was actually a lawsuit or some BS because Audi refused to replace them.

Almost every car around 98 had this problem I believe, so trying to get a new display out of a junker or something won't work because that one prob does the same thing. I have heard a new one costs upwards or $500. At that price, no one is willing to replace it and we all just live with it. Welcome to Audi ownership.

I don't know if the fan would work or be worth installing. The prob does get worse the hotter it is. If you try putting a fan back there, you better post back on the results and how you did it.

Doubt a fan would help the problem.

Everyone has the same complaint, either fading display in the heat, or dead pixels.

The display will improve in winter, assuming you are in a colder climate.

I have the same problem in my 98 A4 and was told to take it out and stick it in the freezer to extend its life. I haven't tried this so can't say whether it is worth the hassle.

Good luck

heheeh I don't think so, the problem is with the wafer thin electronics on the screen that's the problem especially on the rear of the screen, over age the glue degrades and looses contact hence the lose of pixels, it has been fixed on a vauxhall site but very time consuming
