Turbo and air filter???
and what does that mean in english????? ok under the driver side head lamp in the very bottom there is a box metallic box it looks like a big cheese shredder i think it has a filter inside but what does SMIC mean???? once again sorry 4 my ignorance
It is okay.
When your turbo pressurizes air, it becomes hot becuaase it is clsoe to the exaust, and becuase when you pressurize something, it heats up. basic law of psysics. Well, engines like cold air. thye get more horse power from cold dense air. So the hot air form the turbo runs through the side mounted intercooler (side mounted just refers to its location) this intercooler acts as a heat exchanger. basically, the fins on it give it lots of surface area. it takes the heat off the air from the turbo and puts it to the outside air. it is basically a radiator for your air. when the turbo charged air runs through it, it gets colder, the same way when you blow on your finger, it feels colder. this gets colder air to the engine, thus creating more horsepower. yopu wont need to get a bigger front mounted intercooler (FMIC) until you get a bigger turbo
the point of a frount mouned is A) it is bigger, thus creating mroe surface area to cool your turbo charged hot air, and B) it is on the front of the car, so outside air hits it faster and mroe directly. more air going over it means more cooling.

The air from the turbo (boost) gets hot mainly because it is compressed and forced out.. When you squeeze something it creates friction which makes heat, even with air. Thats why you need a FMIC with a Big turbo.
lol, np
and HA! love physics: when things are compressed, the friction isnt the main cause of the heat. think of it this way: the molicules are bouncing at a rate of say X. when you compress it, they still want to bounce with that same speed and distance, but there is more in the way, so the vibrations get shorter, but faster and mroe violent thus creating the increase in temperature. Boyles Law my friends
lol, sry jeff. couldnt resist.

alright my first question is wat is a sw33t blowoff valve for my car?
just kidding
anywhoo...today i was driving my car (a4 1.8t) and i was at a stop sign. im making a right hand turn and i got to floor it, but when i do it makes a loud rumbling sound. i ended up just turning around and bringing my car back home because i didnt want to eff around if my car was making funny noises. when i got home i showed it to my dad and he said that it was probably my muffler that just broke, and that i should bring it into the shop. well the shop was already closed so i had to wait for tomorrow, but then i was looking at this post and started thinking about the turbocharger. when i was listening to where the sound was coming from i pointed right above where the turbocharger would be (i actually didnt know its location until a minute ago) i was wondering if you guys could give me any advice on this before i go into the shop (have you had this happen, is the muffler, or something that could have come loose in that spot etc...)
thanks guys and ill let you know what the mechanic says
