Turbo replacement and timing belt service
I have a 1999 A4 Avant with the 1.8L Turbo. It has about 127,000 miles on it and the turbo went and needs to be replaced. I am opting for a used turbo with a 6 month warranty. My question is whether or not it makes sense to change the timing belt as welland get it all over with. The first timing belt change was at 60,000 miles but from discussions with the Audi dealer, the next change doesn't need to be made until 150,000 (90,000 interval). My thought is that there could be significant time savings by the mechanic, and hence cost savings, to do both jobs at once, but I am getting the impression from the mechanic that the jobs are different enough so the incremental savings will not be that great. Does anyone have any thoughts?
90k is pushing it on the tb. its more like 70-80k
and the jobs are completely different. installing a new turbo you would just have to remove the intake, whereas with the timing belt you have to take off the front end or work in a cramped space

The turbo is a relatively simple somewhat quick DIY job,no reason to pay a stealership. The TB is another story. If your not mechanicaly inclined prob a bad idea to do yourself. I'm with everyone else who's gonna chime in. Change the TB earlier rather then later as before 2001 i believe the tensioners were designed poorly.
