Default Ugh - Alternator is dead...

Got in the car to get my mid muffler put on and the happy battery light is shining. The volt gauge is right at 12 and no amount of revving changes it. All of the cables are tight and corrosion free. I just ordered an alternator from O'reillys for $150 (once the core is turned in). What a bummer.

What's even worse is this: http://www.kinstle.com/~drbob/galler...torReplacement

What a ridiculous amount of work to replace an alternator! Sure - thats for a 30v but they're probably the same - goddamn audi engineers....

Anyone done one on a 2.8 before? Any tips/tricks I should know?

HAHA I am helping my friend replace his tonight! It's a 1.8T but it was still a pain to pull the old one out! Now we get to put the new one in! Oh and we had to cut a bolt to get the old one out because the fan clutch was in the way and we couldn't get it off. We have no idea how we are going to put it back on but GOOD LUCK!

Yea its a PITFA. I did it last november, getting to it isn't the hard part, its dislogding it from that cramped space. See two AC lines run almost directly infront of it. So after removing the bolts, which was difficult enough, I had to turn it sideways to slide it past the stubborn AC lines. You'll need the right tools and PATIENCE

AHHH We just finished!!! It RUNS!!!! But we are having a problem with the volts dropping when it's just idleing. It didn't do that before. It doesn't die but they drop to 12 instead of 14 where it was before. Could that be because the batt. was complety dead and it isn't charged all the way?

It still should be 14 volts. Do you have 14 volts when you rev?

Yeah. The only time it isn't is when it's idleing. Which is about 800-900RPM. As soon as you go to like 1000 or more it goes to 14V.

Got it in yesterday. It took a LONG time but it's done and hopefully I won't have to worry about it for a while. My old ALT was wayyy low on output and this new one was right where it should be.
