What kind of engine oil do you use?
Mobil 1 0w-40 full synthetic w/ OEM filter (for my 03' 1.8t). This is what's also recommended by my dealer.
I've used Castrol before in my old car w/ no problems, & have also used Chevron in a pinch. Just stay away from Pennzoil... heard way too many issues with them.
DavidL, what's wrong with Mobil 1?

On more than one occasion Ive actually been recommended to run a non synthetic oil in my 2000 1.8T.
Im in the process of using Auto Rx to clean out the sludge build up (the downfall engineering of our engines) and when its complete I was told its better to stay with a non synthetic because of its properties
I was also told that syn runs colder but it holds in the sludge that will accumulate over time
any thoughts?

In a turbo car you want a good synthetic, if you want a synthetic that is really good at cleaning use Shell... A synthetic will not necissarily "run cooler" but it will stand up to the high temperatures better... So would you like a conventional oil to reach the temperatures in which it starts to cookin the turbo, or run a synthetic that will stay fluid...
I have heard running a conventional oil in the V6 is perfectly fine, I dont due to the higher temperatures my oil experienced (250ºF at times) but if I did not hit such high temperatures I would use a conventional oil later in the engines life (most likely ahigh mileage oil)... In a turbo car I have always used Synthetic due to the heat produced by the turbo...

Anything that is VW 502.xx spec is fine to use. Fully synthetic is a must with the 1.8t. Whoever says not to use full synthetic with that engine should be burried up to their neck wherever scorpions breed.
haha good tip 1.8Tee
I agree that with a turbo synthetic should always be used ... during the auto rx cycle I can only run "dino" and not a synth
but when I am complete synthetic is goin back in for sure
