I had good results doing two things.
Replacing the pre cat O2 sensor(s)
Running Gumout Regane injector cleaner half a dozen times at fillups. <--- This stuff actually worked pretty damn good for me.
Doing both got me an extra 100 miles per tank when I had my B5.

well you didnt post if it was the 1.8t or the 2.8 but ill assume its the 2.8Q cuz u get 15mpg, i have a 99 2.8Q and i get about 15-19 a gallon i usually drive anywhere from 230-290 miles depending on how hard i drove the car
