Default will changing 18" wheels help

Hi All,

I have a B7 Quattro 3.0 S line with 18" wheels and am trying to soften up the ride. Would changing to 17" make much difference or would I need to replace springs and shocks?

Just realised that originally it would have had 16" wheels

Going with smaller rims and larger sidewall tires (to keep the speedo somewhat correct) will provide a softer ride. I don't know how noticable it would be. Handling will also decrease with smaller rims.
