All the things you mentioned are simple DIY except the 90k service.

Have a shop do the t-belt, and fix the rest yourself.

If you cant even do the simple stuff yourself, then maybe this is not the car for you.

You could find some of the exterior parts at a salvage yard real cheap and DIY. The timing belt can be DIY if you got the mech skills but even thats still cheap. Whatever you do don't get a domestic car.

You're 18 and in college... you're supposed to be driving a POS. Dont' get something you'll struggle to afford only to worry about it all the time when you should be going crazy...

i dont struggle to pay for maintence, i can easily make this payment to have it fixed, i struggle on whether or nit its logical to put 2 grand into a car that i would rather trade in towards a new one. That is where the money issue comes in, whether or not i can afford to buy one out right, i dont wnat car payments in college. I would still be able to fix all the stuff that needs to be when it comes up. But for my first semester away im not gonna be working, i just think it would be a lil to much to handle.

Why is everyone so against domestic cars, mechanically they are very sound. I had a mustang GT and never had to put any moeny into it unless it was gas, insurance or aftermarket parts. And then when it needed new spark plugs i could get them at auto zone and they would be the right ones for the job. Not to mention aftermarket parts are usually cheaper.

What i think is gonna happen is im gonna either fix it or get an 02 or 03 B6 1.8T FWD. Use taht thru college or for 2 years etc... and go from there. I just cant justify buying a quattro which is a lil out of what i want to spend when i dont drive in the snow and hardly in the rain. IM mean im living in So Cal and going to school in Tempe AZ.

yo adam, how about a well modded B5. the one you have is very nice...if I were you id find a mechanic to do the T belt, and do the rest yourself. i have an 01 A4 i got with 45000 on it for 12900, last year. non sport, but its got tip/quattro, sunroof, plether and bose etc. search search you can find a very decent car. sounds to me the only thing you can afford is a B5, so why not get a nice one..

getting a new car would be pretty cool but..... If you do small easy/moderate work on your own car , youll appreciate it much more. Fix that shyt up a little at a time. It would be real cool man , youll also learn alot. Like what they said , timing belt wise , get that done ASAP and then do little things here and there. Goodluck and always post what the deal is. Curious to see what you do cause I used to feel somewhat simliar.

well my dad (who makes my difficult discusions for me if i cant decide) says he will loan me how much in cash im gonna be spending and i can pay him back when i get a job so i dont have to worry about working first semester. He leans towards me getting a new car b.c at school i dont have tools nor a garage to fix it and i also dont have an easy way to get it fixed.

I have had my t-belt done earlier, but im sry but i have trouble working on German cars, my mustang i LOVED working on but it just seems to be easier, more room under the bonnet etc... Right now im stucked at what to do. Tomorrow im having the bumper ixed so my trade in will be higher (its 230 to fix and prolly help me out more than that on the trade in).

Im sry to say it looks dim for me keeping this car, and im having trouble finding a car with the right mileage, and price.
