I'm not the most technical here but If you want to chip and mod the car the 1.8t is the way to go I like the Quattro to.I have a 2000 A4 1.8TQ if I bought one today It would be a 2001 1.8t because you've start with an extra 20hp over 00, 99, 98,etc.......

99.5 is the best year for the B5 if you plan on doing any moding. It comes with the 2000-2001 cosmetic updates and is not drive by wire and does not have a sensor in the intercooler which can create headaches if you plan on doing any big turbo upgrades. 99 and earlieris fine for moding, you just wont have a few cosmetic changes that the 99.5 got such as symphony radio, hvac unit, one peice headlights, tail lights, door handles, wheels, normal size passenger side view mirror, fog lights, different gauge cluster/illumination, updated CD changer if equiped.. So i guess there are more than a few updates.

Just in case youre wondering.. When i say "door handles", etc, i dont mean earlier models didnt come with any, i just mean they were updated-newer style.

i agree with the above, im trying to compile some exterior upgrades for my 97, i already have 1 piece HID's, and i rear tail, lol. its a PITA, if its clean i say consider it. just look for diff seal leaks, guage cluster light fading, and control arm issues....anything im forgetting?

Tie rods, service records, especially timing belt and oil changes. Everything else should be pretty obvious if you know what to look for.

Well, I am going to have to reccomendan '01 1.8T because they are clearly the best year of the B5Anyway, as you can tell I am bias, lol. But in all seriousness, if you want a B5, go with the '99.5+ due to cosmetic and interior differences. If you have a decent budget, get a low mile newer B5..... you have many mods to do and im sure you would prefer the perks over the older B5's...... Good luck with your search
