wow - I get to ask a question for once
My decision and/or suggestion to tow with a manual transmission is not based on mechanical engineering expertise.
I've been driving for nearly 30 years and have driven everything from a moped to a semi. Yes, tractors, snowplows, backhoes, bulldozers, dump trucks, etc, etc......
My feeling is that with a manual, I can feel/hear the clutch laboring or slipping and shift accordingly.
Automatics and me just don't get along. I need to be more part of what's going on.
Invent a wheel chair with a 5-speed for my generation and you'll be rich!!

Cool beans - I know for a fact we can tow - audi has an OEM hitch, and when I was in Europe I saw dozens of A4's and half of them had hitches.
Yeah, in Germany you will see everything, Audi, BMW, Merc, all towing. Usually trailers and such, but sometimes even other cars. So you should have no problems will a few chairs.
