Default 2007 A5 key jamming in ignition

Hi guys

I have a 2007 (57) A5 and the key is jamming in the ignition. Initially it was only once in a while, now it's more frequent. Sometimes it take 5-10mins of pushing in and out to release it!

I take it that the ignition switch needs to be replaced. I have found some on eBay, but don't know what parts and work is needed exactly.

I have a very good local mechanic who I use, he has latest snap-on diagnostics. Can I use him and avoid the main dealer?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! :-)

Silly question.... How many keys do you have for the car. Does this happen with one specific key, or all of your keys? Is there anything attached to your key that may interfere with insertion/removal of your key? Is your key bent?

When turning your key to the "accessory, on, or off" positions do you notice any tightness or resistance (making it hard to turn the key)?

When you try to take the key out, do ANY lights, accessories, or electronics such as your radio remain on, or functional?

If yes, try turning your key to the "acc" position again, then make sure the gear shift is fully locked in "P" -Park. Then ensuring your foot is on the brake, or your emergency brake is engaged (on), see if the shifter will allow you to move the gear select lever into other gear while the engine is OFF. Then ensure you are able to return the gear shift lever to PARK, and that it locks there. Meaning it cannot be moved if bumped, or pushed. NOT pressing in the shifters release button. Once you're positive the shifter is locked in park. Turn your key fully to the OFF position. (Radio, etc. "should" turn off. Esp if you're doing this with your door open.)

Once the key is in the OFF postion, and you've verified that the shift lever is securely in the "P" PARK position. Try to turn your steering wheel, to make sure that it has "locked" and does not have an excessive amount of motion.

The steering wheel will be HARD to turn with the ignition off. So this may take some muscling. But it will be obvious if the steering wheel is locked or not. If the steering wheel is NOT locked, turn the key to accessory again. Attempt to turn the steering wheel a little to one direction. The turn the ignition OFF again. Again, try and check to see if the steering wheel will lock. If it doesn't, you may have bigger issues.

If the steering wheel DOES lock, and the shifter will not allow you to move it into another gear, and the key is in the OFF position but still not coming out. You may have an issue with the actual locking mechanism that the key fits into.

Depending on several factors, if the locking mechanism needs to be repaired. You may want to first speak with an auto mechanic/tech that is familiar with German cars of your type.

Are you still under warranty?
Yes. Go see your dealer first, find out if it's covered.
No. Well you still have plenty of options as well.

Most Auto shops if asked will take a look at it for free when taking your car to their shop. If not, you can even take a look with your own eyes.

PLEASE ASK A CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE BELOW SUGGESTED STEPS!!!!!!!!!!!
IF you are unsure of your skillset in any manner. DO NOT DO THIS.
It's NOT rocket science, but it's tricky and can be done with patience.

Things to look for if you're lucky, and your key isn't in the ignition yet.
Does the black plastic around the ignition have any small circle pin holes?
Does the metal portion your key fits into have a tiny notch, groove, or triangle hole in it near it's edge?

If so, these are alignment holes. They were specifically designed to install/remove the locking cylinder contained in your ignition. BUT a VERY important part is having room to access these items if you plan a "DIY" repair/replace.

Once the ignition is accessible, you may insert your ignition key.
Turn your key until the little triangle notch in the metal locking cylinder matches position of the pin hole in the black plastic that surrounds it.
You will then need a long very skinny firm wire to insert into the hole in the black plastic WHILE your key is still in the ignition lock cylinder.

With the wire in the pin hole, and the key still in proper alignment.... You may try to carefully work the entire metal locking cylinder OUT of the ignition. With your key and locking cylinder coming out all together.

With a new key locking cylinder, or repairing your own. The steps will be the same, but in reverse.

Please take a look at this video to assist you.

GOOD LUCK to you, and hopefully you're able to resolve your key/ignition issues.
