Excessive Oil Consumption with the 2.0 TFSI?
Aspen79 and Audi Tek,
Thank you. I appreciate your explanation. Would occasional use of Techron or Lubro Moly Jectron help keep the tips of the injectors clean?
Also, I understand the build-up of carbon on the intake valves. Other car manufacturers are experiencing this problem with their direct injection engines, too. Can the intake valves be "de-carboned (sic)" without removing the head?

Hello there guys , i have an Audi A5 2.0 TFSI 211hp , it is using 1L of oil per 400kms , is this normal ? and what could be the causes and how much will it cost to solve the problem . Thank you guys i hope i get a reply soon
Best way to keep the valves clean is to treat it as normal maintenance. When I was still an Audi tech, we had a set up that sprayed a solution into the intake while the engine was running at the dealership. May not clean really dirty valves but it will prevent them from getting that way. I'd recommend every 20,000 miles to have the service performed. It's not MORE maintenance than the older cars, just different. They can be cleaned without removing the head(s). With the intake off, Audi had us use BG cleaner (forget the BG number). With closed valves, dump some into the ports and let it soak a while. Then, the "special tool", a dozen zip-ties zip tied together to form sort of a brush. The end is poked, rotated, scrubbed on the valve head to loosen the deposits. Afterwards it needs to be sucked out with a brake bleeder venturi type vacuum. Hard to explain without a picture. You get as much out as possible, spray some brake cleaner in and re-vacuum. Turn the engine to close the other valves and repeat. Odd as it sounds, it was very effective and substantially less expensive than pulling the heads.
No, 1 liter/400km is not normal. Converting to "American" that's about 250 miles per quart. No idea on the cost, all depends on what's wrong. Unless you've got a ton of miles, may be covered under Audi warranty. If it's just the crankcase pressure regulator and ECM reflash, wouldn't be too bad even if it was customer pay. Some though, need new pistons and rings. THAT would get into some serious money.

I have the same problem, my car is an A5 s line 2010 and it is burning approx a litre every 400 miles, i bought the car from an independent dealer 2 months ago and took out an extended warranty with the RAC (platinum)
I am going to phone Audi Cardiff tomorrow and see what they say, if they brush me off does anyone know if the RAC warranty will cover me? Thanks

Hi
The book says up to 500ml per 1000km (625 miles). If your engine is consuming 1lt in 400 miles it is over double that. My suggestion is to contact your friendly Audi dealer. You may well be pleasantly surprised. My Audi dealer is very helpful in dealing with on going oil consumption issues. My engine uses 300ml per 1000km. Within guidelines but still annoying. It has covered 20,000 km. Apparently the cause of the issue is excessive crankcase pressure.
All the best.

)
I have owned an audi a4 turbo since 2009. Recently at about 52,000 miles, oil usage jumped two twice normal - normal being .5 litres per 1,000k, 1/2 qt per 600 miles.
I am using 1 qt per 600 miles now. Past warranty.Called dealer and they said "it might not be worth keeping the car to pay for a fix!" Glad I now know about the TSB issued last November and the fact that some of you have had dealers do this without charge for cars past warranty. Will call the dealer Monday to see if they will do same.

I had the same when I purchased my 2010 used with only 16000 km, the MMI
showed 0 on the red bar after about 5 months after purchase. The dealer put me on an oil consumption test after my oil change and yes there was a consumption problem. The replaced the PVC valve and all ok since...mind you i still check the oil and consume about 1 litre between changes which the say is in the norm.

i have an audi a5 softtop 2.0turbo petrol engine which is now 3yrs old and no problems with the car except the high oil useage.i have monitered this snce 38000 miles and the average mileage per litre is 600 miles.
audi are going to do a complete check on this as it is not even close to their estimate of 1000miles per litre which i think is rediculously high anyway.most modern cars use 1 litre per 10000 miles
i will advise the outcome

I have a 2009 A4.Started to eat oil at 85,000 km....roughly 51,000 miles.
Recently was using a lite for every 700 km.... ouch ! Black soot in exhaust pipes as well.
now in for testing and the PVC valve replacement which is their usual first try at correcting. They are charging me $575 for this plus the oil consumption testing. Hope it fixes it but if it doesn't then they say they will need to redo the pistons. No idea yet what that will cost. This is a major failure in my view and I doubt I will ever buy another audi after this, especially if the PCV valve replacement does not work.
