Excessive Oil Consumption with the 2.0 TFSI?
The car just completed its initial oil test and was judged to be using 0.87 of a litre in 600 miles! I understand that replacement of the crankshaft seal and a crankshaft pressure release valve is now to be undertaken together with software updates and if this reduces the oil usage to half a litre or less of oil over the same distance that Audi will do no more as they consider this an acceptable level of consumption! I will just have to wait and see. The car goes in for repair to-morrow the 9 August.

TheMac,
Tell us what happened after those repairs (crankshaft pressure release valve change etc.). I have same problem here in Finland and my audi A5 2010 is also going 15th september to local dealer to do the same "tricks" and 30 000
kilometers service...

Very good news! During the Dealership's test oil consumption first showed on the MMI after 150 miles - having previously been replenished by the Audi dealership. Following the repair in which the spark plugs etc were replaced the engine feels livelier. No oil consumption has yet appeared on the car even though it has travelled over 700 miles since its last oil replenishment. On this basis oil consumption appears to have been cut to a maximum of fifth – 0.29 litres per 600 miles (about 0.174 litres per 1000 kilometres).. I am extremely happy.
A colleague told me of numerous TFSI owners in East Belfast (N. Ireland) having to buy excessive amounts of oil for their cars. It sounds that there may well be an underlying problem with this type of engine which could probably be fixed by the method adopted on mine. If it’s of interest to you I understand that there must have been so many complaints that Audi issued a circular to their dealerships around the beginning of this year on what action to take in the event of customer complaining about this problem. Apparently before this on failure of the test they would have replaced pistons etc but now they wait and see if reducing the pressure etc in the crankcase is successful.
I think that you will probably be lucky in this instance as Audi tend to look after their customers pretty well.
All the best

Yes the lot! Plus taxis leaving me back to the house and collecting me again. The dealership had difficulty downloading the software to their computers and on one occasion the car wasn't ready for collection. I had been left down to the dealership by my wife and after a bit of banter I was given a key ring, an umbrella and an Audi watch??? A bit disproportionate to the inconvenience but they now have a customer for life – (provided the car gives no more trouble).

I have an A5 2.0TFSI. After around 2000 km I put 1lt in. When almost 5000km was reached another 500ml was added. I do not believe that the consumption is excessive, but my previous A4 1.8 did not require a top up in the 2.5 years I had it. I have noticed that the MMI is not so accurate. I generally lift the bonnet/hood to reset things, drive it, stop, wait 2 minutes and then without touching the brake switch the ignition on. engine must be warm. Oh and i shut the door too to stop the beeping. Sometimes the system can take a full two minutes to give a reading, other times it is instant. Last top up i went to my friendly audi centre and one of the service team checked with a dip stick and said i needed 500ml which he added. He said MMI is a guide and nothing more. I did not know you could buy a dip stick. Useful piece of info that.
The other possibly related issue is the sooty pipes. The residue does not smell oily, but it does seem a little abnormal. I believe that it is not unusual for high performance engines to use more oil than common garden ones. There is nothing abnormal in the engines operation.

I'm happy
Guys,
I bought an A4 2.0TFSI in June 2009 and since then after every 1500 to 2000km I’ve been topping up engine oil, Almost completed 36000km and very frustrated and really want to get rid of this car.
Every time I’ve been to the dealer he has been advising that it’s an normal consumption and recommended by Audi. After following dealer up for couple of times he finally end up conducted following on my car in August 2011: oil test, replacement of the crankshaft seal and a crankshaft pressure release valve is now to be undertaken together with software updates.
But again after roughly 2000km engine oil light came on again but dealer advice that it now fall under normal Audi recommended consumption, same thing happen again this month.
I am so frustrated and very disappointed to purchase A4.
Guys, please advise what my options are? It has been 2.5 year and am I regularly visiting dealer every second month.
Also, I believe if we form a group and approach Audi or Media together then we might get a resolution.
Regards,
Ank

I guess all engines are different. My 2.0TFSI appears to be using more oil than during break in, but aside from the additional cost, and the fact that it is the only oil burner I have owned, if that is normal operation, then I can live with it. There is a lot to like about the car, and so I will just keep an eye on things. I suspect mine is using 400ml per 1000 km. What I am most interested in is the cause. High oil pressure to the Turbo to keeps things lubricated causing some slight seepage into the exhaust perhaps? Who knows?
