Just Test Drove the 2011 A5 Convertible
We're thinking of getting a new convertible, altho' it'll be very hard to give up the 2006 A4 cabriolet 1.8T, with the phenomenal Amulet Red exterior... the best red ever seen on the road (why, oh, why, did they give up this color???).
But we first test drove the BMW 328i, which is a real looker. Very sharp, modern, lines on the inside and out. And it drove like a dream (but not necessarily better than the Audi A5). My wife decided against the BMW for two reasons. She likes a convertible to look like a convertible, even with the top up. And the BMW is a hard top, so it looks like an ordinary sedan without the top down! The other reason was the fact there's only rear wheel drive available, which is lousy for someone driving to work all winter in the NYC area.
So on to the A5, and we test drove a 2011 premium plus with the arum beige exterior and brown roof (this would be the only one we'd select for color). The color options with all these cars today are lousy... greys, blacks, whites, mucky or gaudy reds! Yuck!!
Anyhow, the A5 drives a lot like the A4, and doesn't drive us as wild about it as the Amulet Red one we'd bought before. So I dunno... if they don't come down on the price, I think we'll go another year and try in November 2011 (we always buy at the end of the year, to get the best price on a convertible!!). We'll watch out for a phone call within a month or so... I suspect they'll call us if no one else will offer as much (my best offer was 49,000 for the premium plus with Bang/Olufsen, Teak, Milano leather (extra $1000) and Navigation. The Navigation we really didn't want for the extra $2,500. That's why we couldn't reach a price agreement. MSRP was an incredible $54,000 or so.

I've looked elsewhere, and I can see the A5 Cabriolet premium plus is pretty well always equipped with the Navigation option. So I have no choice. But I found another one that at least didn't include the Bang/Olufsen sound system and Milano leather, so that'll get me closer to my price. CarsDirect says $48,728 is the target for an MSRP of $51,215.
If I get that CarsDirect price, I'd say that's the best I could expect to do.
Now, I'm only wondering whether I'd be more likely to get a lower price by waiting till the end of November or December! Of course, by then, there may be none left in the dealerships!!!
