As a benchmark. What would you say the avg. amount of Liters to fill after a filter change should be?
Do you know what the percentage of thermal expansion is for the Audi ATF?
It seems to expand dramatically. It was 80 degrees out this morning So I figure that was also adding to my problems. Considering the transmission is almost at the temp for capping it off. It was impossible for Audi to fill this transmission correctly in 1 hour when I brought it in HOT.
It would have never cooled enough. That's great He just did my A8. But they had it all day. That’s why it's not whining and they used 7liters.
What I will do for now is put it up tonight and turn on the AC in the garage. that way it will cool overnight. I can fill it and monitor the temp with the VAG-COM and cap it off correctly. The fluid so far has ALWAYS been warm on my hand so it can not be less than 98 degrees definitely more if it is warm to touch.
So basically the car shoots past the temperature range and the fluid expands so much that I'm screwed before I even get my *** under there. That would explain why I can't put anymore in there with it level and since the internal fluid in the torque converter and the transmission itself will be even hotter and have expanded more it will push more into the reservoir and overflow it. So measuring the fluid temp was idiotic.

Ok all is done.
I checked it as it sat in the drive with the vagcom and it was 34 degrees celcius.
I put it up on stands the night before turned on the a/c to cool the car down.
used the vag-1924 fill tool. I enlisted my little guy to call out the temps on the screen as I laid under the car.
No more whine at all. shifts fine

So it was too hot right from the start before? How much more went in?
Glad to hear it's good...

Did you by any chance hear the fans kicking in by the time you finished filling her up?Originally Posted by Jackmup

Or, better yet, how long did it take to reach 34 degrees - about 10 minutes?
Thanks
By the way, great job.
I am in South West Florida so my problem was/is that the car is 33 degrees Celcius before I even get started. That is just from sitting over night in the driveway. Everything here is warm to the touch including my concrete floor. I am originally from NY and up there in the summer the transmission would feel cold.
When I started it in the garage it was at 27C but after running it through the gears for 10 seconds it shot back up immediately the whole procedure only took me no more than 5 minutes from the time I started the car until I torqued the fill.
Keep in mind the transmission housing is not even cold so my warm up time is very quick. I also put it in Reverse 10 Sec, Drive 10sec, Reverse 10 sec, Drive 10 seconds. Then I have to jump out and with my fill already loose I dive under the car while my son reads me the temp. If you were say In NY and it's cold, your engine would warm up way faster than your transmission (causing your fans to turn on) especially when the car is not moving. I would say take your time and let the transmission warm up go through the gears more to keep the fluid flowing through it and that will warm it up.
The good thing about yours being cold is you will be able squeeze more ATF into the pan in advance, before it expands. You will loose some of it but at least your ATF will make it out of the bottle.
It may be easier to have someone monitor the VAG-COM and deal with shifting the transmission. While you do the grunt work and watch the fluid level below.

As far as the total amount in there now it would be impossible for me to calculate it. SORRY. Between Audi and myself filling it I would GUESTIMATE about 6L maybe a touch more. (2002-3.0 5spd)However that is a huge guess. If that A-hole let my car leave under filled how can I trust the amount he wrote on the ticket.
You really should not fill based on what you took or I put in because if it was under filled (over the course of 80-100K miles it will have lost some fluid) you will not fill it enough.
If it was overfilled you risk having the fluid expand blow out the vent and spray across your hot exhaust- Very flammable.

Agreed, but its a really good starting point. You really should not fill based on what you took or I put in because if it was under filled
And for anyone ordering aftermarket transmission kits make sure it comes with at least 8 liters. the trans will take about 6 but you will spill some in the process and you will want some leftover for the cabinet. My original kit came with 5! WTF is wrong with these people?

Totally agreed... Bfernungen includes only 4 quarts for a 12v engine, and of course I came up short.Originally Posted by Jackmup

Think of it, they're self-proclaimed "professionals"...
Thanks for the pointers regarding the temp.
