Default 18" tyre pressures

Can anyone help with tyre pressures for 18" wheeels on a A6 1.9TDI 1997?

Just check the sidewall of the tire. It will have the recommended pressure. You can also check the manfacturers website.

I understood the inflation pressure on the side of the tyre is the maximum operating pressure. Not the reccommended.

Refer to your manual or call a reputable tire shop in your area and tell them the size -- i.e 245 50 17 -- and they will be able to tell you.

Somewhere in the 36-42psi range should work pretty good.

really depends on the tire. I run 18" Michelin Pilot Sports on mine at 32psi.
