1998 A6 2.8 vs. 2000 A6 4.2 with mods
If you didn't want to do the timing belt part & labour would be $1755 that is including all the tensioners Honstly I don't even think the mechanics would want to do the car if it was just the timing belt the come back would not be worth the headache I am just trying to be straight forward with you I don't want to see you have any further problems down the road
I gather you meant $1775 for the TB and tensioners without the Water Pump.
I appreciate what you're saying, but, I believe the seller will not absorb the cost and hopes to sell it to someone who will buy it for around $19,000 Cdn and do the TB themselves.
As far as I'm concerned, because of the extra cost and hassle of getting the car back here, I'm not willing to pay $2000 over what I had agreed to for what I believed was a car that was completely ready to go.
Queen's Plate Auto recently sold a '00 4.2 in Toronto for in the $22,000 range plus tax with only 102,000 km.
While this car has the much nicer 18" wheels & tires, the new tranny, the upgraded performance chip, window tint and some minor cosmetic changes, it still would be much harder to justify paying around $21,000 in total for it there in Toronto with 180 km vs. in the $24,000 range for the one with only 102 km.
Richmond Motors gave me the $800 number as a ballpark parts & labour for just the TB. I didn't ask at the time if that included tensioners, but, I did ask about the water pump and he said that would be extra.

Now he wants 19 no Timing belt run away yes there are definetly a lot better deals out there just keep looking BTW have you looked at any 2.7 bi turbo's those are also pretty quick the 2.8 & 3.0 are a little slow for my liking but that is my own opioion anyways happy hunting and email me if you have any further questions I'd be glad to help
OK, thanks for your input. I actually wasn't looking for a 4.2; I was looking at 2.8's here in Calgary, but, when I did a check on each one, every single one spent a considerable amount of time in the East before it came out to Calgary. I figured there wasn't much point in paying a western car price for an eastern car and that was why I was looking in Toronto and noticed the 4.2 that we've been talking about. After seeing the extensive writeup on Ebay and the good pics and upgrades, I thought at $19,000 Cdn there in Toronto with it not needing a dime spent on it, it was still a good deal notwithstanding the mileage.
Unfortunately, although an extensive search on the car's background reveals it is indeed a very clean car, the TB is still a big issue and frankly, should have been addressed much sooner than this especially when the seller is claiming that ALL the Audi scheduled maintenace has been done and given all the other money that he has spent on other non-essential stuff for the car.
