1998 A6 C5 2.8 OBD/VAG-COM help!!! :(
Hello everyone, I just joined the ranks of Audi owners with the purchase of a 1998 A6. I love this car to death (Previously had a Merc 300e 2.6 W124) such a nice and smooth ride, power too . I noticed this car has a diagnostic port which really got me excited. I was about to buy a 16pin to USB cable to use for the car but the listings on eBay say model years 2002 and up. They have the same ports and it's the same chassis/car. Would these still work on my car?
Here's a link to the listing. OBDII USB Cable
Any help is appreciated!
BTW, it says it supports VAG 409.1 or older. It's a 16 pin plug on the cable. All I want to do is make the windows go up and down with the remote, and doors lock automatically.

Yeah, you're good. If you want software (should come on the CD with it anyhoo): http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/57832/Audi/Release4091us.exe
And the door lock/window control pdf: http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/Audi/C5...LockCoding.pdf
When you get everything figured out (if you can't get the software to work, just let me know and I can help ya), play with the Measuring Blocks inside each module to see how the car reads stuff. For example you can read the speed, torque, rpm, position of the seats (if you have power seats of course) and a bunch of other cool stuff. It's definitely worth the $20.

i have a Q! ^^^
my friend got an OBDII cable. and he downloaded the program, and i want to use it to make it be able to roll down my windows and wat-not with the remote like JDw124s said. but he says it wont work cuz to change that stuff you need the program that you have to buy! cuz the one that you can download free can only read and clear codes. is that true?? or where can i find the free program to do it?? (my comp is a VISTA if it matters) he says it does....
thanks in advance!

You can do it with the non registered version just fine. I did it with mine, most of us on here have done it the same. Use the link for the software that i just posted, install it, and follow the instructions in the door lock guide.
The non registered version can do basically 75% of the stuff that average user would want to do. That includes using the measuring blocks (to a certain extent, but plenty enough to be useful and awesome), changing the values of certain modules (if those modules support the operation), and obviously to read fault codes and clear them (though you can't do the auto scan in the non registered version).
I have Vista and had one little hiccup while installing the drivers for the usb cable - basically VAG-COM can only utilize COM ports of 2,4,6, & 8 and it registered mine as like 3. You just have to go into device manager to change it to the proper port. I wrote up a nice guide on here, but one of the moderators deleted it because he's a **** and i apparently didn't post it in the right section at the right time (w/e).
On a further note, my friend who has a '98 A4 and I tried to connect my software/cable to his car and it didn't work at all. After contacting Ross-Tech (manufacturer of VAG-COM), they said that it's really a "hit and miss" for different models with the off-brand USB cable. So if it doesn't work this might be the problem.
