I'm thinking about getting a 1999 A6, but it has 143,000 miles on it. Personally I'm not familiar with Audis, but generally how long will these engines last, and if it dies on me, how much would a replacement be? I'm not sure what trim it is, but it's an A6 with leather and 4WD (I've seen both AWD and 4WD listed for this car, you tell me). Anyway, I looked at the carfax for it and it looks good, just regular maintenance, no problems otherwise.

All the usual:
when was the timing belt done, control arms, shocks...

All A6's are either FWD or AWD.

the 2.8l engine in that 99 are known to last a very long time. I have 138k on mine and have no doubt it will make it to 200-250k miles.

edit: Oh ya, was the transmission fluid changed? worry more about the transmission then the engine.

 

my 99 A6 2.8 quattro has 165K miles on it and it still runs and drives, shifts like it had 20K on it... its absolutely a beautiful car, engine and transmission are strong. i have no regrets in buying it, ive changed the spark plugs and wires with the top notch everything, i use premium and its improved the car, the maintenance was kept up on it and i plan to do the same and i hope i get it to 300K and i honestly have no doubts about this car.

How much is the asking price? With such high mileage beware of deferedmaintenance. Some people are very hard on their cars.
