Default 1999 A6 Quattro No Start (P1338)

My nieces share this car and recently it would not start. The initial assumption was that it was the fuel pump, and there is no schraeder valve on the rail to check pressure. I pulled the codes and it came up as P1338 or a bad cam shaft position sensor.

I still wanted to rule out the fuel pump - and disconnected the fuel line at the rail. I don't get any fuel with the key in the "on" position, but it does flow when the engine is cranking (although perhaps not with the pressure I expected).

Would a faulty sensor result in a no start condition? How hard is this to replace? Any advice?

Thanks - I can grab one once we shovel out up here in Maine. Do you suspect the relay because the pump should run in the on position, not just while cranking? I know that is how Volvos are set up.

two fold- your cam sensor is linked to the this switch and switch activates your pump- Did you replace the cam sensor-that could be your problem- either fix is easy and relative inexpensive repair- note: I am from CT 34" of snow I hear you!
