2.5TDI Fuel consumption
Hi,
Not sure if it's going against the grain asking about economy on here
I've just gone from a 1.8T Avant to a 2.5TDI Avant (163PS). The 1.8 was Tiptonic, the 2.5 a multitronic. I've been impressed by the improved fuel consumption on the work run as it's gone up by 10-15MPG. However, I'm wondering about the "extra urban" figures as they seem very similar to my "urban" numbers.
The standard figures say 30mpg urban. I get high 37's. I guess my urban is not as urban as the test
However, I've just done a long (400+ mile) motorway run, and was looking forward to the numbers increasing. The stated figures are 48.7mpg "extra urban". I struggled to get more tha 38.6mpg. However, this was 75% of journey with cruise set at 80mph (ahem, 70mph
).
What I want to know is: are these figures comparable to what you guys get? The car's well run in (30K miles) and recently serviced. Also I checked all tyre (sic
) pressures before leaving.
I guess I'm asking to find out if it's worthwhile trying some premium diesel fuel instead of the regular "supermarket" stuff.
Any opinions?

Hi C
I've got a manual 2002 A6 2.5TDI (163ps) Sport that, after 10,000 miles of my use up and down the country has averaged 40.6mpg, so your figures are pretty accurate. The Multitronic should be the same as the manual. The manual has 6 gears, which are all very usable, so I just cruise along very comfortably. Mine has done 87k miles, is well run in, and I use the basic supermarket diesel. I dont believe the pricier stuff would improve your figures.
Cheers
