If you want performance and reliability/durability pick the 4.2
If you want performance and the ability to mod, and are willingto have reliability/durability issues, pick the 2.7t.
If you don't care about performance then the 2.8 and 3.0 are both for you.

I would favor the 3.0 over the 2.8, both are sluggish but the 3.0 is a less annemic.
I personally love the 2.7 for its spot side and performance upside, I mean a chip will get you 4.2 performance. But Turbos add a possibility of break down.
4.2 is the way to go if you're not gonna mod and wants OOMPh! plus it's got the wide body and a sexy ***
All these cars require religious maintenance and are expensive to maintain. A lot of the problems are not just prone to 2.7T... (window regulators/guides, tie rods, control arms, coil packs, water pump.... All models can have problems, but the 2.7T adds the turbo and oil line variables for exmaple.

RE: 2.7t ? 2.8? 3.0? wich one to choose
Haha Gigi, I got to agree wit you on the 4.2 styling. I test drove the 3.0, 4.2, and ended up buying the 2.7t (no test-drive) I found the 3.0 to be a lot of fun. It wasn't extreamly fast, but it was all right. The 4.2 was awsome, the sound of that v8 compared to the tiny 3.0 was incredible. The 4.2 looks and feels better than the 3.0, but above all if you don't mind the mantienance and what to mod the 2.7t is deffinatly the right way to go. There are literally hundrends of things your able to mod on the 2.7t. I bought my 2.7t without any intentions to mod, but when i see the added power you can achieve I decided to start.
Either way I'm sure you will love the A6, but if you live in a place with potential to snow don't buy anything without QUATTRO, it makes a world of diffrence.

RE: 2.7t ? 2.8? 3.0? wich one to choose
If you are going to mod, get the 2.7t, no questions asked.
In my experience the 4.2 is stronger and more powerful stock
I would recommend the 2.8 over the 3.0. The 3.0 and 2.8 are both very reliable but when the 3.0 has problems it tends to be more expensive and harder to fix.
Overall, I would go with the 4.2, great power and very reliable.
