Is the ABS light also ON? If it is, likely the brake pedal light switch problem. Cost 12.00 at dealer.

No the abs light is not on. just out of normal driving the light turns on and stays until the car is turned off and on again.

Default MAF sensor may be the problem

Buy CRC MAF sensor cleaner from auto part store to clean the MAF wire and see what happen. Did you switch to K&N filter lately? Maybe too much oil fouls the MAF and trigger this light.

Also you can vag-com and see any code stored even no CEL.

Options: Brake Light sensor on wheels, battery about to go dead.

Also when the light comes on again, ask some one to see if you get brake lights on when brake pedal is pressed. If it is not ON then it is brake pedal light switch.

i haven't changed the air filter at all. i have completely forgotten about it. It can cause the esp light to go off?

Only sure way to tell is to hook it up to a scanner and see what the code points you to. Otherwise, I would first check the brake fluid level and see if it is topped off.
