Default 2000 A6 2.7T No TB

Hey guys I have been working on my a6 for quite a while now, I just dropped in 42k motor after the one in the car had a crack in one of the heads over Cyl 1.
I have done quite a bit of searching around for my answer prior to posting this.

The motor I have is the same one that was in the car, APB 2.7T my question is there is no TB, and the motor is not at TDC, Can I just rotate the crank until the marks there line up, unbolt both the cams on each side, and put them so the timing marks on cams line up, and go from there? Or is there an easier way to do this than that.

I do have cam lock bar, and crank lock pin

Cam rotates once for every 2 rotations of the crank. These are interference engines so you can't just rotate the crank with the cams stationary. When crank @ timing mark, #3 piston is @ TDC.
What you listed is correct approach, but the order is wrong.
1st unbolt the cams, then turn crank to TDC, then install cams.
I think the easier way is only if crank is very close to TDC already.

Do you know history of the 42K motor, & why it's missing TB?
Bummer about the cracked head. Hope it's not contagious as I have the same engine. So are you going to change water pump & all the timing components while you're there?
