Default 2000 A6 4.2 fan clutch

Does anyone know if the fan clutch should disengage when the engine is cold or even partly warmed up. In other cars I have owned if you run the RPM up to approx 2000 you will hear the fan disengage and go quiet. Mine roars all the time warm or cold. I have checked the clutch and when the engine is off you can spin it by hand. Does this mean the clutch is bad ??

I had the same problem, just changed it yesterday. The clutch fan is suppose to move when that car is off thats fine. If you spin it slowly you might fine a notch in it. That notch is making the fan stay on all the time making the car sound like a damn truck!! I just put a new engine in my car and when we started it up i noticed that the fan was on and the car was cold----thought that was really weird. That fan only sounds loud like that when the car is hot and stays on for 10 min or so. The fan always turns but just dosent sound like a stupid truck. I was gonna buy a new one but instead I put the old one in from the other engine. When I started it up it was still loud but after 15-20 of letting it warm up it was nice and quiet again. What a relief, just change the clutch fan and the problem shoud be solved. I have a 2.7T, im not sure about the 4.2 but I did mine without take the front end off.
