While learning new things be careful and stay safe- get extra hands help and do not gamble with the "german engineering".

Allright.
I've been looking around for a mater rebuild kit for this transmission and have found some very varying pricing. I was hoping someone could jump in and let me know if i'm heading in the right direction.
On E-bay there is a rebuild kit from a vendor for $425, no steels included. A full set of steels from the same vendor is about $300.

A second place I found a kit, was TransmissionPartsUSA.com, $466, full master rebuild kit, steels included.

A transmission parts place here in town wants $1460 CDN for a Mater kit from Trnastar Industries. Crappy customer service though.

So, the pricing is all over the board. I was partial to the kit from TransmissionPartsUsa because of the price.
Any suggestions.
A member here wrote up that Dacco sells torque converters, but I can't find a vendor online that carries them. Any suggestions where I could buy one?

Thanks alot.

JR

For TC I'd suggest the dealers item - it must be an upgraded one (captive clutch(lockup) seal upgraded). Find somebody who could supply it - the pricing could be 30-35% lower.
Do not go after rebuilds.

Well, due to working out of town I'm now ready to pull this transmission out and start the teardown. Bought the complete master rebuild kit from TransmissionPartsUSA.com and an upgraded TC from an vendor on E-bay, a transmission shop in Texas. Got all the parts, so now it's just work.

One question I have, is there a way to increase transmission line pressure in the ZF5HP24A transmission? That can be one way to ensure the clutch packs do not get burned out as easily. I had bought an upgraded valve body for the transmission in my truck to allow for better hauling ability, the Dodge 48RE transmission behind a Cummins Diesel is a notouriously weak link. The pressure was increades by something like 60%. Is there anyone out there that does this to the Audi transmission valve bodies?

Thanks for all help,

JR

Be sure to send the vale body in to get rebuilt or you will be pulling the trans out a second time I can tell you that from past experience !!!!!

Got the transmission out on saturday and split it apart last night. The removal of it was actually pretty easy, i have definately had to do a lot worse. The hardest part was figuring out a way to support the engine to drop the support cross member without the use of an engine hoist. Once that was done, I had the transmission out on the floor in about 4 hours. The dissasembly was another hour and a half. The one thing that made this removal so easy was a transmission floor jack that I borrowed from a friend of mine, it really made the transmission come out fast. Now that I have removed one of these I can honestly say that anyone with a decent set of tools, some basic technical knowledge and a good common sense can pull one of these transmissions without too many issues. An impact a set of impact allan sockets make this job that much easier.

Well, found the problem with my car. The culprit was a split A-Clutch basket . As I mentioned the car was in an accident which is most likely what caused the damage. As per the attached pictures you can see where the basket split where the clutch plates retaining ring is located, obviously the weak part of the basket wall.

Now here is the hard part, other than the dealer, can someone suggest a shop that might carry one of these used in the US. Finding used Audi parts up here in Canada is next to impossible, expecially internal stuff like this.

In hind sight I should have torn the tranny apart before spending $900 US on a rebuilt torque converter and a master rebuild kit, but oh well, you live and learn.

I really appreciate any help.

sorry to bring this old thread to life, but there doesn't seem like much else to go on. I am wondering if there is any update to this? Also did you end up doing the full rebuild even though you found the problem as something else? If so what did you use as a resource to do so? Thanks in advance
