Post 2000 A6 auto won't shift into gear

Hi,

My parents have a 2000 A6 with an auto transmission. They live in New York and I live in Michigan. They tell me they have a problem getting the car to shift into gear. They say that there is a red light symbol on the center console on the left hand side that comes on when they start the car. It looks like a foot on a brake. They say that if that red light is on, they can't get it in gear. after the car sits for a while or they trun it on and off, they can usually get the light to go off. I am assuming that this should be something that a mechanic could diagnose easily, but that must not be the case. Does anyone know what this light is indicating and are there any suggestions on how to fix it ?

This is a warning light to remind the driver to step on the brake before shifting into gear. It is perfectly normal. It should go out once the car is in gear. If the brake is not applied, the car will not shift into gear.

if they are pressing the brake, the brake pedal sensor might either need adjustment or replacement

I already verified that they are stepping on the brake, so I am guessing that there is an adjustment that has to be done to the sensor or it has to be replaced. The thing that surprised me is that our local Audi dealer could not figure this out.

Thanks for the response.
