Default 2000 A6 Engine noise......

Hi all,
Hey I have a kind of squeaking/whistling noise coming from the engine at idle, it seems to go up and down with the revs, and if I shut the HVAC off it will go away, only to come back immediately after turning the HVAC on, it only really does it above freezing or when it gets warmer. I am thinking it may be the water pump? What do you guys think? I have about 59,000 or so on the car, so this is throwing me off a bit….

Thanx!

AirCon seems to work well, hasn't gotten too hot here yet but it seems good, just got the car in Sept. so haven't used it in anger yet.....

We have a '98 A6 with the same exact problem. It's coming from the fan that's mounted on the inside of the radiator on the passenger side. A gentle tap on themotor housingwith a piece of pipe normally stops it for the duration of thetrip. Once the car shuts down, though, itcomes right back onwithstart up (only, that is, if you have either the heat or AC on--if you shut these off completely, no fan and no noise.)

A bearing insideof the fan motormaybe?

A more thorough diganosis and any tips on removing said fan would be **VERY** appreciated.

Thx,
John

I had the same problem in my '00 A6 2.7T and it turned out it was a bad tensioner on the serpentine belt.
