2000 Audi A6 - 4.2 - No Reverse
Hi guys,
hoping someone can shed some light. About a week ago, my car stopped going in reverse. It behaves like it is in neutral. All forward gears work just fine. Took it to a reputable transmission shop, they couldn't find anything. Guy told me that there is no codes, they did all the testing they normally do, and by everything they see, car should go in reverse but it doesn't. He mentioned something about reverse drum, and quoted me $2800. I am not even sure that will solve the problem. Any of you run into something like this? I am not sure what to do, I will take it to a different shop tomorrow and see what they say....
Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

I'm having the same problem on our 2000 Audi A6 2.7t. No reverse but all forward gears work. We were quoted $6000 for a new transmission that would have to be shipped from Germany or a $4000 used transmission. $2000 for labor.
Let me know the outcome of your Audi. Thanks, --dh

Well, we took it to two different shops. First guy, that has been doing transmissions for over 20 years, mostly on foreign cars, says from his experience that it is the reverse drum. Quoted us $2800 to rebuild it.
Second shop (I didn't really trust that the guy knew what he was talking about), said that basic rebuild would be $1800, and then when he opens he would check on the "hard" parts and cost can go up from there to no one knows what. We still might take it somewhere else just to check. We are leaning towards fixing, but still not 100% sure. Seems like a lot of money to put in 12 year old car with 130k. Just hope nothing goes wrong after we fix it....
