This car has 140k miles and this winter in the Alaskan cold weather we noticed a gas smell. BAD. Local Audi specialist says we need $1300 worth of injector replacement. I've heard there are o-rings that can be replaced pretty easily. Do injectors go bad? It still runs great; just smells horrible. Can someone tell me the part # for these o-rings? How much should they cost? Thanks in advance for the help.

 

there is a recall for something in the fuel tank that creates gas fumes.

id probably try some fuel injectors cleaners 1st or a fuel injector cleaning service.

 

I neglected to mention that I did see small amounts of gasoline on the top of the motor, near the injectors. I read about the fuel tank recall, but I don't think that's the problem. I'll get some injector cleaner to start with, but I don't want to have to buy $1000 worth of injectors if I only need o-rings.

You can definatley replace the o-rings (that's all he was going to do )
Audi, BMW, Range Rover all use the same type O-rings and will have them in stock. It is a very easy procedure to replace them. I can do it a few minutes.They are cheap I don't know how much Audi "Gave" them to me last time. Wow "Freeebee" I almost forgot about that. (They stole my spare tire and rim though)They will be a dollar each at most.


If you want to to this yourself
Unbolt the fuel rail(allen screws)
pull up until they all pop out, remove them and replace the o-ring
lube them up and push them back in
make sure they are all seated well and tighten the fuel rail down again
on my 3.0 i need to move some other crap out of the way you may have to as well, wires etc.

A bad injector is not determined by a leak on top of the engine
A bad injector is either clogged, stuck open, stuck closed or something like that intermittently.
Not all of your injectors will go bad at the same time.
If an injector was bad you would get a Misfire code and the engine light would come on.

You either have a bad o-ring or bad fuel regulator or the fuel rail is leaking
I bet it's the o-rings as well.
If the fuel reg was bad the car wouldn't start.
if the fuel rail was bad gas would be spraying everywhere-Never heard of it happening.

Just make sure they use some Assembly Lubricant or Vaseline when they re-install them so they don't tear again.

 

A common problem with the C5 A6 is a leaking fuel line (rail) right by the injectors. It only surfaces in cold environments (ie MN, AK...) during the winter months. Once the engine warms up, and the fuel rail warms up, it seals itself. The permanent fix is to replace the whole fuel line. Check into that before replacing injectors. It very well may be the injectors, but check all your options first.

Cleaning a fuel injector would only help you for the time being. If you want a permanent fix, better replace the injectors along with new O-rings. And if you're worried about a $1000 replacements for fuel injectors, better try for aftermarket fuel injectors that doesn't cost more than $200. try this link
