Default Is the 2002 3.0 engine a bad choice?

I'm looking at buying a friends 2002 A6 3.0 awd and I can't find any performance parts for this 3.0 engine. Is it a problematic engine? Everybody on this forum talks about the 2.7T and the 4.2, but not the 3.0. I would appreciate some feedback with this before I make a mistake buying a 3.0. I just want a nice looking, reliable luxury car. I don't want to build a rocketship, just lower it with some nice wheels and maybe a cold air intake and free flow exhaust to try to increase the mileage and maybe pick up a few hp as well. I can getwhat I feel is a good deal on the car and I know the history since new.

$9500.00 with 120,000 miles and new brakes, tires, and the timing belt/water pump done this week. The body is excellent. Nice grey leather and fully loaded. I couldn't find one dent or scratch. Does that sound like a good price? Thanks in advance for the feedback. Happy New Year.

I have a 2002 3.0 and the engine runs great. I don't think there are any major problems you have to worry about. Me personally would have liked more power, you get about 220 hp from the 3.0, but no one talks about the 3.0's because they can't be tuned and stuff. I mean the engine gets the job done, i'm happy with it, i love the car. I just tinted the car, and debadged it a while ago so i'm not trying to make it a rocketship either, but its nice and it moves alot faster ( i think) then the 2.8 which was the old engine in the a6's.
if you don't need the power go for it, but don't expect it to become faster, its a dead end, but a very reliable engine.
i havent had any problems.

The price sounds Ok, for the year and mileage. Unless the engine was abused (doesn't sound like it was) then it's good for another 120k. I have the 2.8 with over 132k miles, it runs like new, and your 3.0 is as good or better.
Good luck

Thanks guys. I'm going to have another mechanic friend of mine inspect the car within the next few days before I buy.

One more thing. I hear a lot of talk about ignition coils going bad. Does this happen frequently on the 3.0's or just the other engines?

Take care.

Ignition coils go out more often in engines with force induction so 3.0's are safe. Good engines and a lot easier to maintain than 2.7's. If you want a good well balance vehicle 3.0 does the job. 2.7's and 4.2 make a much more fulfilling ride especially if you want to mess with your ride. And the price seems fair although you should try to bargain it down if you can...debate its well over 100k and its now 6 years old. Its no big deal since they'll go a lot longer due to the near-perfection german engineering. Hope you enjoy w/e you decide!

I have an '02 3.0q and it is great. I just had the timing belt service done at 92k. Never any big problems. I would have the suspension parts inspected by your mechanic, end links and control arms, cv boots, etc could be bad and if you take it to a dealer it will be $$. Great car though, I plan on keeping it for a long time (almost at 93k now). Good luck!

With proper maintenance it should run forever. You'll love the quattro if you have to drive in snow. I would suspect the cost of the modifications you mentioned would far outweigh any performance gains. It won't accelerate hard, but it will cruise happily all day at "break the speed limit" speeds. And it is rock solid on the highway at 80, 90....
