Default 2002 A6 Quattro 4.2 Sport - Good find?

Hello Audi Forums!

I test drove a 2002 A6 Quattro 4.2 Sport at a local shop a few days ago. Very comfortable and plenty of power. I didn't see/sense/feel any problems (strange noises/braking/accelerating) with it, but I know very little about Audis. Engine looks pretty clean, I didn't notice any leaks underneath. Other than some minor wear on the steering wheel (stereo controls) everything on the interior looked great. Carfax and Autocheck (DMV) came back clean. If anyone can lend some knowledge or advice on purchasing this vehicle please let me know.

The car has just over 57700 miles on it. At this point the salesman has agreed to $19,200 out the door, tax, tags, registration, etc.

What kind of maintenance could I expect in the next 6-12 months? Next 10,000 miles?

Also, what kind of modifications could I make to improve fuel consumption while maintaining a good amount of power? At what cost?

Any tips, help, and advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

Bought it. Quite pleased!

Any ideas on why the tread on the front driver's side tire has more wear than the other three? I wonder. Spare hasn't been used,so thatmakes me happy.

Other than an aftermarket air fulter, I'd like to start from the ground up on this car. First the tires/wheels/brakes/suspension, then exhaust, and after that a chip. Any recommendations/alterations to that plan?

Good Price for a 2002,the yearAudi made improvements to the C5 model. I have a 2000 4.2 V8 and I love it.Just timeless styling!! It hold up wellagainst andimoeven looks better than newer model vehicles. Can'tbeat the wide flared stance with wide tires. So intimidating!

1st thing I recommend is cutting out the center exhaust resonator and having straight pipes installed.A muffler shop can do it for $100 to $150.The car runs better without them. Oil temperature goes down25 degrees and you'll notice ALOT more power after a few days once the computer adjusts. As a Bonus you get a nice exhaust sound that is not much louder than stockonce the engine heats up.I love starting it up and blipping the gas pedal alittle. It really gets peoples attention and let em know it's a beast!Alot of people have done it all yielding positive results. A panel KN&N air filter add alittle more positive noise, but some have complained the oil from the Knnclogsa sensor. No problems so far

I got my 2000 A6 4.2 in July, 2006.
So far the car runs nice and clean.
I had done an anual manitenance, and a wheel alignment (due to worn tire tread on the inner side of both front tires) since. If you have one tire wearing out faster than the others, have the tire balanced. If problem continues, you might need to do an alignment.
Driver side window seems to have mind of its own when I want to close it.
Otherwise it is a great car.

Yes you can. I've heard it even more of an increase for turboed engines which run better cooler. Theturbos also spool up faster.Do a search on this forum as well as Audiworld.com.There has been no negaive experience doing it. Just alittle louder/mearner sounding and more power. The resonator chokes the engine to keep sound down. and you shed about 15lbs.
